Dimethyl silicone oil and phenyl silicone oil are commonly used organosilicon materials in industrial, daily chemical, and mechanical fields. Their temperature resistance differs significantly, primarily due to the molecular side chain structure, resulting in distinct application scenarios at different temperatures.
Dimethyl silicone oil has a simple structure with methyl groups as side chains, limiting its overall thermal stability. Its typical operating temperature is -50℃ to 200℃. Above 200℃, the material is prone to chain segment breakage and oxidative decomposition, accompanied by increased volatilization, yellowing, and performance degradation. It is only suitable for medium- and low-temperature applications, primarily used in daily chemical skincare, general machinery lubrication, room-temperature defoaming, and low-temperature demolding. Its advantages include high cost-effectiveness and excellent low-temperature fluidity.
Phenyl silicone oil, by replacing some methyl groups with rigid phenyl groups, significantly improves molecular bond energy, thermal stability, and oxidation resistance, resulting in a substantial upgrade in high-temperature resistance. Long-term use can withstand temperatures up to 240℃, and short-term high-temperature resistance is even stronger. It is less prone to volatilization, deterioration, and yellowing at high temperatures. Meanwhile, its low-temperature resistance is slightly inferior to dimethyl silicone oil, and its viscosity tends to increase at low temperatures.
In industrial applications, phenyl silicone oil is suitable for demanding conditions such as high-temperature equipment lubrication, high-temperature defoaming, electronic thermal conductivity, and high-temperature sealing; it is also the preferred choice for high-temperature processing in daily chemical and cosmetic industries. Dimethyl silicone oil, on the other hand, is more suitable for conventional room temperature and low-temperature civilian and general industrial applications, and is a general-purpose medium- and low-temperature silicone oil.
